I’m a man of Sci-Fi shows and movies. Ya know, Star Trek (Voyager preferably), Battle Star Galactica, The Expanse, the list goes on. I’ve always called them “Stories”, which is a term derived from my grandparents. One holiday break while visiting my parents, my mom was watching a show called Law & Order SVU. I was doing some work for what seemed like hours, and the next thing I knew, this show was still on. I asked her how long it had been on today. She said, “oh thats all this channel is son. All day, everyday.” I replied, “I’ve been working for the last few hours, and you’ve been watching it the entire time. Is it really that good?” She replied, “oh you’ve never seen Law & Order before?”, “No” I said. She responds with, “Well, I’ll leave you to it.”
As she left the room with the tv on in the background, I noticed myself slowly drifting from working to watching. Slowly but surly, my attention swayed to the show more than work. After about 20 minutes of dedicated focus to the show, I was hooked. From 3:30pm to 8:45pm, from lunch through dinner, I kept watching. My mom walked into the living room to see me sitting on the floor, legs crossed with my laptop on, but screen idle. She said, “Hey son…hows the show?” “Huh?”, I said. “Oh, it’s pretty good.” “I can tell!” she said. “We’ve had lunch and dinner and you’re still watching. You must have zoned out! Looks like you’ve found new Stories to watch huh?” I laughed and said, “Stories! That’s wild…Yes, I did.” *DUN DUN!
